The Farmington R-7 School District is involved in two unique and fun programs known as Bringing Up Grades, or BUG, and Terrific Kids. The programs are sponsored by the Farmington Kiwanis Club and community businesses.

The goal of the BUG program is to motivate students to do their best and achieve academically. During this past school year fifth grade students at Lincoln Intermediate School were invited to participate in the program.

Every fifth grade student that maintained or raised their grades in Communication Arts, Mathematics, Science, and Social Studies was honored at the an awards celebration in May. There were 320 awards presented to students, with 14 additional awards for teachers for their support in helping students be college and career ready.

The goal of the Terrific Kids program is to develop young leaders through practicing good character and good citizenship. Third grade students from Jefferson Elementary, Washington Franklin Elementary, and Roosevelt Elementary were invited to participate in the program. Terrific Kids is a recognition program that promotes character development, positive self-esteem and perseverance.

Every third grade student that demonstrates good character and good citizenship during a specified quarter was recognized as a “Terrific Kid" at the end of each quarter. Nearly 300 third grade students in the Farmington school district were recognized by the Kiwanis as "Terrific Kids" and received an award and a pencil for fourth quarter.

Community sponsors donated money to support the BUG and Terrific Kids programs in the Farmington schools. The program sponsors include Mineral Area Regional Medical Center, Ozark Federal Savings and Loan, Raymond James Financial Services, Seth A. Pegram, Attorney At Law, D and D Graphics, First State Community Bank, Mineral Area College, and Belgrade State Bank and Wise and Grounds Coffee Shop.

Among the incentives purchased for the students were sling bags for the BUG Honor Roll students and Terrific Kids pencils. Mineral Area Regional Medical Center donated rulers for all Terrific Kids and BUG students.

In addition to community support for Terrific Kids and BUG, the Farmington High School KEY Club (also sponsored by Kiwanis) served as ‘Super BUGS” to tutor fifth grade students at Lincoln Intermediate throughout the school year. The Key Club students also met quarterly with the third grade students throughout the school year to remind them to demonstrate good character and to distribute incentives.  Daily Journal Online Article
